HerdTrack as a traceability system

Biosecurity and traceability are not just policy issues discussed at conferences – they are daily realities on farms. When an outbreak like the recent foot-and-mouth disease occurs, farmers feel it first: stricter rules and regulations are introduced, borders are closed, and livestock trade is restricted. In light of the ongoing battle against foot-and-mouth disease, the importance of traceability is becoming increasingly evident – not just as a management tool, but as a necessity for the growth of the South African livestock industry.

The Minister of Agriculture, John Steenhuisen, warned at last month’s National Biosecurity Summit (hosted by the University of Pretoria’s Biosecurity Hub) that farmers who are not willing to implement livestock traceability will exclude themselves from international trade opportunities in the future. He emphasised, “Traceability is no longer optional, but a necessity in an increasingly competitive and regulated international market.”

At the same time, it’s important to recognise that traceability is not just about regulatory compliance. It’s about risk management, producer support, and long-term sustainability. This is exactly where HerdTrack proves its value. As a system developed in South Africa, for South African conditions, HerdTrack is not a generic overseas solution – it is a user-friendly tool tailored to local challenges, infrastructure, and farming contexts.

South African farmers work under constant pressure to manage their herds efficiently – from identification and recordkeeping to preparing documentation for auctions. On top of that, complex regulations can arise during disease outbreaks. The new foot-and-mouth disease regulations announced in June this year, for example, introduce additional requirements for livestock movements. Without a digital traceability system, this quickly becomes a paperwork nightmare. It not only increases administrative pressure but also exposes farmers to fines and production interruptions – all factors that can be easily avoided by using an integrated system like HerdTrack.

What sets HerdTrack apart is that it’s not merely a traceability system – it’s part of a holistic approach to livestock management. Farmers gain access to real-time data on their animals’ behaviour and movements, a digital herd register, animal health history, and more – all on one user-friendly platform.

The message is simple: if South African farmers want to compete in a world where food safety and animal health are increasingly in the spotlight, traceability should not be seen as a burden, but as an investment.

A system that truly works at ground level is one that doesn’t rely on perfect cell phone signal or expensive hardware. HerdTrack was specifically developed with these realities in mind. This means less dependence on paperwork, greater efficiency, and greater peace of mind when the next crisis arises. With HerdTrack on your side, you are also building towards a more sustainable, competitive, and resilient future for your farm and the South African livestock industry.
